Nkosi promises to nurse city’s finances back to health

With the city's service delivery challenges, a budget of R51.2b has been allocated.

The newly appointed MMC of Finance Clr Fanyana Nkosi delivered his budget speech on May 25.

NEWS had the opportunity to chat with Nkosi about his appointment. He said he is ready to serve and ready for the responsibility that lays ahead.
“This appointment is nothing new because I have been working closely with the former MMC Gersbach in the finance office. I was not thrown into a deep end. I’m well informed of this department and hence we have allocated money where it needs to be,” said Nkosi.

He served as the DA spokesperson on Finance, Economic Development, and ICT before the elections in 2021 and served as an advisor to the former MMC of Finance for the last six months.

With the city’s service delivery challenges, a budget of R51.2b has been allocated to address many of the city’s challenges. “Our budget sets the course for us to intensify the implementation of our back-to-basics agenda to improve service delivery and accelerate inclusive growth for the benefit of all the residents and ratepayers of our city.

The budget will assist in nursing our city back to financial health,” said Nkosi. The MMC was criticised by the opposition party for urging residents to fix potholes from their own pockets.

He said this will save the city some money. “If a group of residents feels they can assist the city in patching potholes we appreciate the sponsorship and commend them for the initiative. We will work with them by giving them the right specs for the right material to properly fix the pothole.

This will assist the city to save and channel the funds where much needed,” said Nkosi. He said by July the service delivery will get in motion.
“There will be changes in the city. Even though they will not be immediately visible, but over time, “ said Nkosi.
