RAG takes on cable theft in Bedfordview

According to RAG general manager Mark Morris, thieves are operating in broad daylight. He urges residents to be on the lookout for any suspicious people, vehicles or incidents.

RAG has responded to several cable theft incidents recently.

According to RAG general manager Mark Morris, thieves are operating in broad daylight. He urges residents to be on the lookout for any suspicious people, vehicles or incidents.

He said that Van Buuren Road is under constant threat from copper cable thieves.

“We need residents’ help to stop these criminals. Their crimes are jeopardising our country’s infrastructure, costing our economy billions and even making our community vulnerable to crime because of power outages.

“Copper cable theft not only disrupts connectivity in households and businesses but has a devastating impact on the economy,” he said.

“Cable thieves use hacksaws and chisels to access and cut the cables.”

He appealed to residents to report anything or anyone that arouses their suspicions, regardless of whether they spot these tools.

Morris reported that in a recent cable theft incident, RAG demonstrated its commitment not just to catching criminals but to ensuring that there is sufficient evidence to successfully charge them.

“RAG responded swiftly to an alert about suspicious activity and possible cable theft in the vicinity of Graver and Harcus roads and Florence Avenue. Our reaction officers went door-to-door to talk to residents and track down the suspects.

“After apprehending them, RAG contacted Telkom’s security advisers to establish what evidence was needed to build a strong case against the suspects. We gathered the necessary evidence and ensured that it was processed by SAPS with the suspects.

“RAG’s experience, investigation skills and close working relationship with specialised security role players like Telkom’s security team will help to ensure that these suspects are brought to book,” Morris said.

RAG is a non-profit, community-based organisation that was started almost 20 years ago by residents, for residents.

“RAG’s existence is for the community’s wellbeing, and we always go the extra mile,” stated RAG chairperson Marina Constas.
