Diversity on Melville Koppies

As the nights get colder and the rain peters out, many of the more than 50 types of grasses on Melville Koppies are seeding, as are the two types of clematis.

The wind will disperse their seeds where they will lie low, nestle themselves into the undergrowth and wait for the first rains of spring to give them new life.

Other plants like the kalanchoe and crassula are in full bloom while the aloes are just starting to bud for their showing from June.

The clematis and grasses are seeding

For those who want to learn more about the history and how living things interact on the Koppies, book a guided tour on 079 532 0083 or be there by 08:30.

On the first Sunday of the month, join the guided 8km hike or take a map and a self-guided walk along the many different paths that criss-cross the Koppies.

Melville Koppies is open between 08:00 and 11:30 every Sunday.

Entry fees cost R80 for adults and R40 for children.

Income from entry fees is used for maintenance of the Koppies, which amounts to R22 000 per month.

Security on the Koppies is provided and visitors can park in secure parking opposite the entrance at Marks Park in Judith Road, Emmarentia.
