Public speakers put their skills to the test at Edenvale High School

It was special to sit in an audience, watch and listen to the future leaders of our country.

Learners took to the stage and showcased their public speaking skills when the Speech and Drama College (SA) held its finals at Edenvale High School.

Ninety-four schools from the greater Johannesburg region participated in the 61st edition of the finals hosted on April 6 as learners competed in teams and individually while representing their schools.

Convener of the event Debbie van Rensburg described the standard of public speaking on the evening as very high.

She said it was a privilege to listen to learners from Grades Seven to 12 share their views, their humour and their carefully crafted speeches.

Debbie highlighted that after two years of hosting online competitions, it was special to sit in an audience, watch and listen to the future leaders of our country.

The winner of the Individual Best Speaker event was Liron Krawitz from King David High School in Victory Park.

The winner of the Individual Best Speaker event was Liron Krawitz from King David High School in Victory Park. Other speakers in the finals were Ruhi Maharaj from Edenvale High, Zahra Küçük from Roedean School, Ethan Gondo from St Stithians Boys’ College and Moshe Landau from Yeshiva College.

The three schools that competed in the finals for the Trophy Team event were Crawford International College Sandton, Hoërskool Secunda and Saheti School. The winner was Hoërskool Secunda. Crawford College International Sandton were the winners of the Impromptu Team event and also emerged as the overall Junior Teams winner and overall winners.

Redhill School won the Senior Teams event.

Speech and Drama College’s (SA) most improved school was Heron Bridge College, while Alberton High School was awarded the trophy for Consistent Endeavour.

Debbie explained public speaking is not just about the trophies and winning. She said every learner who took to the stage and had their say was a win for self-confidence, democracy and sheer courage.

Speech and Drama College (SA) saluted the learners and their teachers for committing to a most worthwhile experience for our schools in and around Johannesburg.

The college thanked the tireless efforts of the adjudicators and convenors who assisted.

Similarly, it thanked Edenvale High for its hospitality and for hosting a prestigious evening.
