Betschana Road water leak to be assessed

“I pay a lot of money for rates and water and it pains me to see the waste and lack of concern for the waste,” said Bennett.

An assessment of a water leak located near Betschana Road Taxi Rank will be conducted after it was brought to the City of Ekurhuleni’s (CoE) attention earlier this month.

This information was shared with the NEWS by councillor of Ward 18 Heather Hart after the publication met with Hart on April 11 to discuss the issue near the Sebenza Taxi Rank.

Community member Brian Bennett brought the matter to the NEWS’ attention on April 7, stating there had been water flowing continuously down Betschana Road and along the pavement parallel to it since November.

Bennett, who makes use of the road, said the continuous water leak had deteriorated the road’s surface near the exit of the taxi rank, which created a hazard for motorists using the road.

Similarly, pedestrians are affected by the water flowing down the pavement.

Bennett said to keep their shoes dry, he has seen pedestrians walking on the tips of their toes through the stream of water.

Although Bennett cannot recall seeing anyone tend to the leak, he said some potholes along Betschana Road were previously repaired. However, they have subsequently deteriorated because of the continuously flowing water.

“I pay a lot of money for rates and water and it pains me to see the waste and lack of concern for the waste,” said Bennett.

Hart said she was first alerted to the leak at the start of April when another community member informed her that there was a leak near the taxi rank.

Although Hart was informed of the leak, she said no specific details of its location were given.

“This is a massive water leak of an unknown origin. The relevant department would need to come with a TLB to determine its source,” said Hart.

“It will not be an easy fix.”

Inspecting the amount of water flowing along the pavement, Hart said she could only imagine how long the water had been flowing.

She thanked Bennett for reporting the matter.

“It’s important that community members work with the city and councillors and report issues so we are aware of them and can investigate.”

Hart said the CoE’s customer care centre is an effective way to report service delivery issues.

A request for comment was sent to CoE on April 11, requesting comment by April 13 at 09:30.

At the time of going to print, no comment had been received.
