Motorists urged to be safe this holiday season

Easter is just around the corner and the EMPD urges motorists to be safe.

The Easter period and other upcoming holidays are often a time marked by an increase in collisions due to the spike in travelling.

This year’s weather has also taken a turn for the worse, with reports of flooding across the country. Heavy rainfall is the most common cause of flooding, particularly flash floods.

Flash floods are dangerous because they occur quickly and leave people stranded with no idea what to do.

Roads and bridges are likely to be damaged as a result of floods. Existing potholes, ditches, and barriers are hidden by water, and failing to be aware of this could result in severe damage to your vehicle and likely cause accidents.

Be vigilant during your travels and keep up to date with the weather forecast to make informed decisions on whether or not to travel during certain weather conditions. It is advised to avoid travelling during floods or heavy rainfall.

If you are on the road during a storm rather try to find a safe place to wait it out.

Express/Thembisan/NEWS/GCN has asked the EMPD to share with families/residents road safety tips on how to be cautious this holiday season.

EMPD spokesperson Thabiso Makgato provided the following tips:
• Motorists are requested to always obey the road rules.
• Put your cellphone out of sight and avoid texting while driving.
• Do not drink and drive whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
• Have a good rest before embarking on a journey.
• Always wear your seat belt/s while driving including the passengers.
• Be alert to weather conditions and make sure the wiper blades are in good working conditions.
• Adhere to the speed limit.
• Check if indicators, headlights and brake lights are working properly.
• Check if your tyres are roadworthy and the pressure is correct.
• Keep a safe following distance and be patient on the roads.
• Stay focused all the time and when travelling long distances take a break every two hours.

“We wish motorists a safe Easter weekend,” stated Makgato.
