Before her retirement, Mercia received a long service award last year for 40 years of service at Tarentaal.

The clinic’s new plaque, which read “The Mercia Sekgarametso Clinic. In recognition of her more than 40 dedicated years of caring for the Tarentaal Village community”, was unveiled at a retirement function organised by Tarentaal’s management.

Born in July 1954, Mercia grew up in Taung in the North West. She now lives in Lombardy East and has five daughters and six grandchildren.

Mercia started working for Rand Aid at its Bramley Complex in 1981 as a care worker, at the age of 27.

“In 1983, I underwent training to become an enrolled nursing assistant,” said Mercia.

“During this time, new units were being built at the Bramley Complex, and I was asked to become the village nurse.”

In 1995, the Bramley Complex closed and Mercia was offered a job at Tarentaal.

“I enrolled as a nursing assistant, under the supervision of Sr Audrey James,” said Mercia.

“I have assisted many other sisters since then.”

Following her retirement, Mercia plans to look after two of her grandchildren, aged three and six.

“I’m going to miss everyone. Tarentaal was my second home,” she added.
