CoE gives insight into Dunbar Road delays

“Due to competing service needs, the work was delayed, but the road is on the priority list of roads that need urgent maintenance,” said Dlamini.

According to the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE), repair work to Dunbar Road is set to start as soon as the funds are made available.

This comes after residents of the Illiondale road raised concerns about its condition and the lack of service delivery to the NEWS in February.

The road is lined with damage, ranging from potholes, cracks in the road’s surface and the road being uneven.

CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said the municipality has been aware of the condition of Dunbar Road for three years.

“Due to competing service needs, the work was delayed, but the road is on the priority list of roads that need urgent maintenance,” said Dlamini.

Dunbar Road’s damage ranges from potholes and cracks in the road’s surface to the road being uneven.

Dlamini explained groundwater seeping into the road was one cause of the road’s deterioration.

He said to prevent similar damage on Dunbar Road in the future, sub-soil drainage must be installed to prevent groundwater from seeping into the layers of the road’s pavement.

Although Ward 18 Clr Heather Hart previously informed the NEWS that funds were allocated to repair Dunbar Road, she said these funds were withdrawn.

Dlamini confirmed this in his response to the NEWS’ enquiry; however, he said the funds were reallocated to the damage sustained in Edenvale during the floods of 2016 and life-threatening damage around the City that required more funds.
