Observatory residents excel in fencing

Observatory residents and fencers Imaan and Aaliyah Cassim recently qualified for the Junior Common Wealth Games.

Imaan (16) and Aaliyah (14) qualified for the games after competing at a national fencing tournament in Gqeberha at the start of February.

At the tournament, the sisters were awarded two gold, one silver and one bronze medal.
Besides qualifying for the Junior Common Wealth Games, the siblings were selected for the Junior African Championships.

Farhana Cassim, the mother of the duo, said Imaan and Aaliyah were the only female foilists selected for the junior championships

The sisters were selected in January to compete in the championships, which ran from February 20 to 27.

“Imaan and Aaliyah were over the moon when they were selected,” said Cassim.

“They felt all their hard work has paid off to get such a prestigious invite.”

Cassim said the opportunity to carry the SA flag and represent the country makes her daughters feel proud.

She added while competing in the events, Imaan and Aaliyah hope to gain experience when competing against other talented fencers.
