Help Edenvale CWL spread the warmth

“The community of Edenvale is very generous. Over the years, the initiative has been well supported.”

Edenvale’s branch of the Catholic Women’s League appealed to the community for donations of wool so that it can start knitting and crocheting blankets, beanies and mittens for those in need before the start of winter.

With winter fast approaching, CWL’s Edenvale branch is hoping to get a jump-start on its project and appeals to the community for donations of wool to create a wool stockpile.

First vice-president of CWL’s Edenvale branch Jackie Allen encouraged community members to donate unwanted wool they may have.

She said any unused balls of scrap wool will be appreciated by the CWL.

Although the Edenvale branch tries to get as many knitted and crocheted items made before the start of winter, Jackie explained that the initiative is an ongoing project.

Last year, the branch made approximately 70 blankets.

“The community of Edenvale is very generous. Over the years, the initiative has been well supported,” said second vice-president of CWL’s Edenvale branch Beverley Benade.

Beverley said everything from the community is given back to those in need.

She explained that blankets, beanies and mittens are all made by the branch’s 46 members.

The group, which varies in age, meets on the first Wednesday of every month at St Therese Catholic Church.

For Jackie and Beverley, giving back to the community is one of the aspects they enjoy about the CWL.

“It’s good to be a part of something. They are a nice group of people,” said Beverley.

Jackie said other events hosted throughout the year include a cake sale, a donkey derby and several others; however, she said the biggest project is the knitting project.

“Something the CWL is looking forward to this year is the Women’s World Day of Prayer,” said Jackie.

Celebrated on the first Friday of March, Women’s World Day of Prayer sees women and churches from the community join in prayer and action for peace and justice.

Donations can be delivered at St Therese Church’s office in Horwood Street or contact Jackie on 062 139 6102.
