According to EMPD media liaison officer Lerato Monyane, members of the unit followed up on information received on February 3 about a consignment of baby diapers that were meant to be delivered at Dischem but wasn’t.

“The officers followed up with the driver of the cargo who was reluctant at first to provide information but later acceded, informing officers he delivered the items to a staff member of Dischem.”

Monyane said the driver confessed the items were placed inside a VW Polo and he was given R20 000 as a token of appreciation.

“The officers were led to Lanyon Street in Benoni. When police arrived at the address, they found the consignment of diapers in the storage unit. A total of 376 boxes of diapers with an estimated value of R300 000 have been booked in at the SAPS,” said Monyane.

Both suspects, who are employees of Dischem in Midrand, were arrested and have been linked to a registered Sebenza SAPS case. Another suspect linked to the case has also been arrested.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident on the same day, members of EMPD Tracing Unit also recovered 100 boxes of soap, 50 boxes of washing powder, 100 boxes of dishwashing liquid, 100 boxes of aromatic salt, 50 boxes of Knorr cubes, 50 boxes of soup and many more at a storage unit in Prince’s Avenue in Benoni.

Monyane said the estimated value of all the items is approximately R500 000.

“ A case hasn’t been opened at the SAPS. The items were later issued back to the owner,” said Monyane.
