Murder case postponed to February

In light of the latest postponement, the accused remains in custody with no bail set.

The murder case of Edenvale resident Patricia Cockerell was postponed to February 22 to allow for further investigation into the matter.

On January 26, the 49-year-old man accused of murder and defeating the ends of justice made his fourth appearance in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court.

The magistrate informed the court that when the case resumes in February, an indictment from the high court to determine where the matter will be heard in the future will be requested.

In light of the latest postponement, the accused remains in custody with no bail set.

Edenvale Police Station’s communications officer Sgt Jacob Mashile previously told the NEWS that Cockerell’s body was found on January 3.

Mashile said that she was reported missing on January 2.

He said Cockerell’s body was found at an Edenvale bed and breakfast by an Edenvale SAPS detective while the detective was following up on Cockerell’s missing person case.

Mashile said the 58-year-old’s body was stabbed several times.

Mashile said after Cockerell’s body was discovered on January 3, a suspect was arrested later that day.

He said the suspect was arrested in Boksburg and taken to Edenvale Police Station for processing.

On January 5, the accused made his first appearance in court.

At his first court appearance, community members stood united holding signs, placards and posters calling for an end to gender-based violence.
