Scout Adventures aims to bring the love of the great outdoors to thousands of young people where they can learn, explore and take part in unforgettable adventures. Having recently completed his matric at St Benedict’s College, Luke is excited to have been chosen for this opportunity.

He is looking forward to volunteering and sharing his love of the outdoors with Scouts and youth groups in another country.

“Scouting prepares you for so much in life,” said Luke.

“It is not just about being out in nature, you hone your planning skills, become a leader, learn how to communicate better and think on your feet in real-life situations.

“I’m looking forward to putting all that I have learnt at 1st Kengray into practice.”

As a volunteer, Luke will be based at Gilwell Park, one of the centres close to London but located in the tranquillity of a woodland area.

He will be joined by 25 volunteers from around the world, giving the experience an international flavour.

Volunteers will work eight hours a day and are trained in more than 35 land and water-based activities, from hiking and raft-building to tomahawk throwing and bouldering.

Volunteers live at the centre and receive their accommodation, food and a small weekly allowance.

“Completing my Springbok colours during Covid times required grit and determination as so many of the normal activities had to be done online,” explained Luke.

“It was tough but the Scouters at 1st Kengray guided me through the process and as the saying goes, a Scout smiles and whistles in all circumstances.”

1st Kengray Scout Group serves the Bedfordview, Edenvale and Kensington areas.

The troop has a Cub and Scout group for boys aged seven to 18 years.
