The appeal comes after an Edenvale police officer was shot and injured by suspects fleeing the scene of a business robbery on January 18.

Edenvale Police Station’s communication officer Sgt Jacob Mashile said the matter is being investigated by Ekurhuleni’s Trio Task Team.

Gauteng SAPS communications officer Lt-Col Mavela Masondo said following the robbery SAPS has launched a manhunt for the suspects.

The robbery, which occurred last Tuesday, was committed at VR Mall at 11:10.

Masondo said suspects armed with pistols and rifles entered a store in the shopping mall, pointed their weapons at staff and customers before taking an unconfirmed number of cellphones, laptops and an undisclosed amount of money.

Edenvale SAPS appealed to the community to come forward with any information that may aid an attempted murder and business robbery investigation.

Masondo said it is believed four or more suspects were involved in the crime.

He said while the suspects were fleeing the area, they noticed a police vehicle that was on routine patrol and started shooting at it.

“One police officer was shot in the arm and was taken to a hospital in a stable condition,” said Masondo.

“Suspects also shot at private security guards who tried to stop them as they were escaping.”

He said the intervention from the security company led to a high-speed chase and shootout on Voortrekker Avenue.

Despite the shootout between private security and the suspects, Masondo said the suspects fled the area in a black Audi towards the R24.

While the suspects were fleeing the area, they started shooting at a police vehicle. An officer was injured.

No other injuries were reported.

Police have opened a case of business robbery and attempted murder for investigation.

“We appeal to anyone who might have information that can help in the investigation or assist in apprehending the suspects to contact their nearest police station or use the crime stop number,” said Masondo.
