“The campaign aims to deter all forms of criminal acts and is embedded in the community policing strategy.”

2022 will be a year of visibility and mobilisation for Edenvale SAPS after the police station adopted the Country in Blue Campaign.

Edenvale Police Station’s communications officer Sgt Jacob Mashile said through the campaign they aim to increase police visibility in the precinct.

The national campaign aims to increase police visibility countrywide.

Mashile said under the campaign, drone policing will also be introduced in some crime hotspots.

“Last year, hotspot areas recorded some of the highest rates of smash-and-grabs including common robberies,” said Mashile.

One of the hotspots identified by Edenvale SAPS for crimes of opportunity such as smash-and-grabs and common robberies were the intersections around Barbara Road Bridge.

“Edenvale’s acting station commander Lt-Col Eunice Nzuza, the visible policing commander Lt-Col France Marweshe, the detective commander Lt-Col Susan Mathebula and Edenvale CPF chairperson Sheryl Damerell saw the need to execute the mandate,” said Mashile.

Mashile explained that the Country in Blue Campaign will see all members of government agencies, security forces and civil society work together to reduce crime.

“Through this concept, all operational SAPS vehicles on the road will have their emergency warning blue lights switched on from sunset to sunrise,” said Mashile.

He said additional operational vehicles, which will include ECPF vehicles, will also be marked in a bid to ensure that police presence is enhanced.

“The campaign aims to deter all forms of criminal acts and is embedded in the community policing strategy,” said Mashile.

“It will encourage community patrollers to mobilise and work closely with SAPS members as force-multipliers.”
Edenvale SAPS also hopes to conduct more awareness campaigns, workshops and visits to schools while the country is on alert level one.

Last year the station enjoyed several successes when it saw a decrease in crimes such as business robberies and robberies with firearms and hijackings.

Mashile said to ensure the number of cases related to these crimes stay low, police aim to patrol hotspots.

He said police are not only working with law enforcement stakeholders to reduce crime but also informants in these areas.

“We need the community’s involvement. We need them to assist in the fight against crime,” said Mashile.

“Edenvale SAPS, ECPF together with the other stakeholders look forward to a blessed 2022.”
