Elma park resident receives Calabash Award

Denise Nicholson said she was humbled and happy to be a recipient of the award.

Elma Park resident Denise Nicholson received the Unisa Chancellor’s Calabash Award for Outstanding Educator recently.

The specialist librarian in copyright and scholarly communication received the award at the 2021 Unisa Chancellor’s Calabash Awards for her contributions to the library and intellectual property worlds.

Unisa chancellor and former President of South Africa Dr Thabo Mbeki presented the award to Denise, who retired from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2020.

Speaking during her acceptance speech, Denise said it was an honour to add the award to her list of accomplishments.

She said she was humbled and happy to be a recipient of the award.

Among her many roles, Denise has advocated for the Copyright Amendment Bill to be passed.

In September, Denise was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Library and Information

Association of South Africa’s (LIASA) online conference.

Other awards presented to Denise over the years include:
• LIASA Academic Librarian of the Year Award in 2001
• Unisa Department of Information Science Alumnus of the Year in 2009
• LIASA Librarian of the Year in 2010
• Wits Vice-Chancellor’s Academic Citizenship Award in 2015
