Regional director and CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa Adrian Goslett said the economy cannot afford to be forced into harsher lockdown restrictions. It will take the combined effort of every South African to help prevent this from happening.

“As challenging as it may be to limit large gatherings and practise social distancing where possible, these precautions are there to help protect you and your loved ones against the ongoing threat of Covid-19 and will also help prevent the need for any further restrictions,” he said.

To help homeowners stay safe when hosting gatherings at home within the current lockdown restrictions, here’s some advice:

Limit numbers
To play it safe, homeowners should limit the number of people they host for any gathering. It would be better to see fewer people at a time and to space out social interactions so that there is time for symptoms to present if any of the guests develop Covid.

As an extra precaution, furniture should be spaced out so that guests are not seated too close to each other.
Sadly, this means the smaller the home, the fewer people will fit within the home responsibly.

Leave windows open or entertain outdoors
To lower the risk of infection, make sure the room is well-ventilated by keeping windows and doors open.
If the weather is pleasant, set up the seating outdoors, as this will lower the chance of spreading any germs.

Anyone with room in their budget could consider covering the outdoor patio to create a versatile outdoor space that is likely to add great value to the property.

Sanitise and wash hands regularly
Before any guests arrive, wipe down and sanitise any high-touch surfaces, such as door handles or countertops.

Homeowners and guests should also sanitise their hands before greeting and eating.

As additional precautionary measures, hosts can use biodegradable paper plates and serve food that can be eaten without cutlery.

Time to find a new home?
“The last two pandemic years have forced us all to spend more time at home than ever before, which has made some people fall even more in love with their homes while others have grown to hate the space they are in.

“If you are feeling sick and tired of your home, get in touch with your nearest RE/MAX real estate agent to find out what the market offers you. You might just be lucky enough to start the new year in a new home,” Goslett said.
