“In 2020, there was a drop in crime due to the national hard lockdowns,” he said.

De Jager added that 2021 saw things return more to normal crime-wise.

“Every month, we reached our set-out targets.”

According to de Jager, there was an increase in common robberies in 2021.

“Many people were robbed of their phones while walking. This type of crime can only be stopped when people become more vigilant of their surroundings,” he said

Another concern for the Bedfordview SAPS was business robberies.

“Sector managers and officers undertook intensive education drives at businesses in Meadowdale and surroundings to highlight the problem to employees and provide advice on how to not fall victim to these crimes,” de Jager said.

He added that the initiative enjoyed positive results.

“The CPF has helped us to get the community on board and we have to thank them for their tireless efforts.”

Although the area was unaffected by the July looting, he said there was an influx of people requesting to join the CPF during this time.

“We believe that we have a positive relationship with our community and we know that with its help and structures such as the CPF, we can only become stronger,” he said.

De Jager wished the community well for the festive season and reminded residents who are travelling to be safe.
