Brothers with a cause

Speaking to the NEWS from Tampa last week, Sheldon (14) said the four aimed to raise $1 000 (approximately R16 187) every month for a different cause.

Kids 4 a Cause hopes to inspire youngsters and schools to make a difference in their communities.

Started by brothers Dominic and Sheldon Fouché, alongside brothers Michael and Christian Kuhn, in 2019 from Tampa, Florida, the four have worked tirelessly to inspire and give back to those in need.

According to the teenagers, their families had always placed value on community service and helping others.

The four, who was born in South Africa, moved to the USA in 2011 and 2012 and the families continued to encourage the boys to participate in charity work.

In 2017, Nicholas Kuhn, the father of Michael and Christian, died unexpectedly.

The boys said they experienced the true meaning of community when neighbours and strangers came together to support the two families during their time of need.

The youngsters said that even the smallest act of kindness made a difference in their lives.

This motivated them to start giving back to others in their community.

And what started as a project for a random act of kindness when they could, blossomed into monthly projects

that supported various causes in their community.

The four then established Kids 4 a Cause, a registered NPO.

Speaking to the NEWS from Tampa last week, Sheldon (14) said the four aimed to raise $1 000 (approximately R16 187) every month for a different cause.

“We are working on putting together our Santa Shoeboxes. Usually, we look at what’s happing around us. In August, when schools in the US start, our projects will be focused around that and in winter we look for organisations that help others through the cold months,” Sheldon said.

He said the brothers hope their organisation would spread globally.

“At the moment, we have a presence in five countries. We want to show that children can make a difference. It’s never too late to make a difference in someone’s life,” Sheldon said.

“We want to help support others in the time of their own crisis.”

Nicole Fouché, Sheldon’s mother, said when children give back to others around them, the mental health benefits are evident.

“Being part of an organisation such as Kids 4 a Cause gives children a sense of value.”

Locally, the organisation supports Little Eden, as well as rhino conservation.

According to grandmother Brigitte Daly from Bedfordview, the boys took up supporting rhino conservation after a visit to Olifants River Lodge in June.

“The boys had a chance to spend time with the rangers and learn more about the fight against poaching.”

The four then set their target and in 10 days they were able to raise $3 000 (approximately R48 563) for new cameras at the lodge.

“The South African branch created handmade soaps to sell and have set a further target of R5 000 for more cameras,” Brigitte said.

Sheldon said there is no age limit for those who want to join the organisation.
