New chairperson to lead Edenvale child welfare

“I believe in being proactive, helping and reaping the rewards of building a better community.”

Following its AGM in September, community member Robert Hooper was selected as Child Welfare SA – Edenvale and Bedfordview’s new chairperson.

Robert was nominated for the position by members of the welfare’s committee after former longstanding chairperson Pieter le Roux stepped down from the role.

Speaking to the NEWS, Robert said it felt fantastic to be inducted as the welfare’s chairperson.

“The committee is getting on well and I have been learning a lot.”

He said the welfare has a strong committee of eight members, which has been working hard for the year ahead.

Robert believes strongly in assisting where he can.

Previously, he was a member and committee member of the Classic Motorcycle Club for 26 years in addition to being chairperson of the club for a year.

While with the club, Robert and his wife Marlene would often assist and raise funds for Edenvale Care Centre

Hospice and the South African Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind.

Besides being involved in the CMC, Robert was also a police reservist for over two decades.

“I believe in being proactive, helping and reaping the rewards of building a better community,” said Robert.

Robert explained that since joining Child Welfare, the main focus has been sorting everything out for the time being.

However, looking to the future, he hopes to garner more support for the welfare of the community.

He hopes the community will support the welfare’s fundraising initiatives and looks forward to working closely with the community.

“In the year ahead, we want to grow the welfare and create more awareness,” explained Robert.

“We want to make the organisation more known among the community.”
