Care centre receives assistance from Rotarians

Malte said the two clubs were made aware of the care centres plight by members of the former Rotary Club of Edenvale.

A cooperation project between Rotary Clubs Johannesburg East and Holzminden from Germany saw Edenvale Care Centre Hospice receive new top loaders and tumble dryers for its laundry.

On October 25 Rotary Club Johannesburg East club president Malte BeierdÖrffer officially handed the laundry equipment over to the care centre on behalf of the two clubs.

He explained this was the second joint project between the two clubs.

The first occurred 10 years ago when the two clubs joined forces and assisted a women’s shelter in need by buying an industrial stove.

Malte said the two clubs were made aware of the care centre’s plight by members of the former Rotary Club of Edenvale.

He said after several visits were made to the centre, the clubs were able to determine the needs of the care centre.

The two clubs donated two top loader Speed Queens and two tumble dryer Speed Queens.

Each of the machines, which were bought from Hirsch’s, has a 10.5kg capacity.

In total, the project cost the two clubs R72 500.

Rotary Club Holzminden president, Inga Weißenborn, who joined the handover virtually, said she was glad everything went well and worked out.

Founded in 2002, Edenvale Care Centre Hospice is a NPO that provides care for terminally ill patients.

With a 13-bed ward and 17 staff members, care of the patients is free of charge; however, there is a fee of R750 on admission.

Since it became operational in 2004, it has provided palliative care to over 750 patients.

The centre’s disease profile includes hypertension, diabetes, cancer, cardiac HIV/Aids, TB and strokes.

Patients are referred to the care centre by hospitals and clinics that cannot accommodate them.

Because it is not a long-term care facility, patients are only treated for 21 days.

Although the centre receives a grant from the Department of Health, it relies heavily on fund-raising and the goodwill of the community and business owners to cover costs.
