Greenvalley fund-raiser a resounding success

"Taking part in this initiative makes me feel the money raised will, in some small way, keep hope alive for these little heroes and help them to receive the treatment they need so they can reclaim their childhood," she said Delene.

Learners and members of the community showed their support for children diagnosed with cancer when they supported a Cupcakes of Hope fund-raising event.

Held at Green Valley Shopping Centre on September 25, National Cupcake Day, the event was described by Green Valley cupcake stand manager Delene Bertasso as a resounding success.

Learners from Holy Rosary School baked and donated many of the 1 500 cupcakes that were sold at the fund-raiser.

Delene highlighted that Andreas Christodoulou from Café Plus, who supports the annual fund-raiser, also lent his support to this year’s event.

“This year the public and Café Plus were supportive and generous, despite the challenges 2021 has given us. “

In addition to the stand at the Green Valley Shopping Centre, there were cupcake stands at Greenstone and Flamingo shopping centres.

Delene explained that National Cupcake Day has been held annually since 2009.

“It is an initiative of Cupcakes for Hope, a NPC which aims to increase awareness about childhood cancer and raising funds for children diagnosed with cancer.”

Delene has worked with the NPC for the past eight years by assisting the area coordinator, Anthea Koen, who is also known as a cupcake angel.

She works with the NPC because she believes children should be carefree and enjoy their days playing with their friends.

Delene said it is saddening to think how cancer takes this away from children when they are forced to fight cancer on a daily basis.

“Their pain and suffering are made so much worse when they can’t access the treatment they need and their families don’t have the necessary funds for transport to and from treatments, for

food and so forth.

“Taking part in this initiative makes me feel the money raised will, in some small way, keep hope alive for these little heroes and help them to receive the treatment they need so they can reclaim their childhood,” she said Delene.
