Two arrested on Modderfontein Road for possession of counterfeit notes

“Under the jacket, there were two black school bags and inside those bags, there were R200 Notes in bunches.”

Two men were arrested on September 10 along Modderfontein Road in Rabie Ridge after they were found to be in possession of over R1-million in counterfeit notes.

Edenvale Police Station communications officer Sgt Jacob Mashile said the suspects were arrested by Rabie Ridge police officers from the Gauteng Highway Patrol.

Mashile said the officers were patrolling along Modderfontein Road when they spotted a white Toyota Hilux bakkie with two occupants in it.

After identifying the suspicious vehicle, the officers started following it. Mashile said when the suspects noticed that they were being followed, they started driving faster.

“The driver started to indicate right but he turned to the left,” said Mashile.

He said after seeing this, the officers switched on their siren and their blue lights to stop the suspects’ vehicle.

“Const Ncube and Const Khumalo approached the vehicle and asked permission to search it and the occupants,” said Mashile.
Officers found a black jacket behind the passenger’s seat.

“Under the jacket, there were two black school bags and inside those bags, there were R200 notes in bunches,” said Mashile.

He said the officers asked the suspects who owned the money but they remained silent.

“The suspects were arrested and taken to Rabie Ridge Police Station to be processed and the counterfeit money was booked into the SAPS.”

Mashile said the suspects’ first court appearance was on September 13.
