Adam Maule awarded for his swimming skills

Although he attained all new personal best times at the gala, his real triumph was in the 100m breaststroke, his second favourite event to that of the 200m breaststroke.

Fourteen-year-old Kensington swimmer Adam Maule won received two prizes for his prowess in the water.

Adam, who trains at the local club Roaring Tigers under coach Tertia Biffi, was awarded a third-place medal at the recent Eastern Gauteng Aquatics (EGA) Winter Championships held at St Benedict’s College in Bedfordview.

Although he attained all new personal best times at the gala, his real triumph was in the 100m breaststroke, his second favourite event to that of the 200m breaststroke.

“I have a great coach and belong to an amazing club and I love getting into that water and challenging myself against other swimmers and myself,” said Adam, who attends Parktown Boys High School.

His second achievement was delayed due to Covid, but at the EGA’s Awards Presentation held on August 21, he was recognised as the Top EGA Performer at the Swim South Africa Regional Level 1 event held in 2019.

Since this achievement, Adam has gone on to consistently attain Level 2 and Level 3 times as he set his sights on entering provincial level events.

“Next to running, swimming is probably one of the best recognised individual sports a person can compete in. In the water, nano-seconds count, even just one incorrect kick in an entire length could mean the difference between first and second place,” said Adam.

“But as my coach says, training improves technique and technique improves speed and in the end, it’s the speed that will get me to the top.”
