Community member hopes to improve green spaces

“I used to swim in and fish in this river when I was a child and now I am scared to go in it.”

In an effort to uplift the community and improve the ecosystem of Protea Park, Edenvale resident Clinton Duncan started a community initiative to clean the park.

Having lived in Edenvale for 32 years, Clinton knows what the park used to resemble.

“I used to swim in and fish in this river when I was a child and now I am scared to go in it.”

Currently, portions of the park are overgrown with reeds, fallen trees block the river in some places and litter is a common sight.

Some of those who attended the clean up said pollutants can be seen in the water often in the late afternoon on weekdays.

Although Clinton and those who share his passion to improve the community have worked on improving the park, August 21 was the first official clean-up.

He said the decision to clean Protea Park came after he spent six months improving Bushwillow Park.

Clinton hopes to organise a clean-up of Protea Park each month.

“Covid-19 hit everyone hard, by cleaning up the park we hope to create a place where community members can enjoy themselves.”

He said the work being done is out of the love for the community and Edenvale.

Clinton thanked those who attended and thanked Dowerglen KwikSpar for the day’s sponsors.

The next community clean-up will be held on Heritage Day, September 24. It will be held between 09:00 and 12:00.
