Edenvale SAPS hosts awareness campaign

“Since we are approaching the festive season, our community needs to be aware of the possible dangers and not to carry a lot of cash unnecessarily when travelling.”

Edenvale SAPS officers held an awareness campaign at Karaglen Shopping Centre to highlight criminals targeting ATM users.

Held on August 19, members of Edenvale’s Social Crime-Prevention Unit, sector managers and volunteers from the station’s Victim Empowerment Centre attended the campaign.

Edenvale SAPS communications officer Sgt Jacob Mashile said the campaign was held to create awareness about the possible dangers at ATMs.

He said these include follow-home robberies, card cloning, scam artists and common robberies.

During the campaign, informative pamphlets were distributed and handed out to the community while officers engaged with shoppers.

Edenvale Sector Three manager Sgt Moses Nematenda urged community members to be cautious when using ATMs and to never accept help from strangers.

Nematenda said if an ATM user experiences a problem at the machine they should call for the bank manager rather than accepting assistance from a stranger.

“Since we are approaching the festive season, our community needs to be aware of the possible dangers and not to carry a lot of cash unnecessarily when travelling,” said Mashile.

He said community members must not openly display money or private information while in the queue at the bank or ATM or while they are using the ATM.

Mashile encouraged community members to consider making use of cellphone or internet banking.

To report a crime or suspicious activity, call 10111, 08600 1010111 or 011 553 8600 (Edenvale Police Station).
