Thank you for your support – Jardine

“Being arrested has added to that stress.”

Bedfordview-based ear, nose and throat specialist Dr Ivan Jardine has once again thanked the community for their support after the case against him was withdrawn from court.

Jardine was arrested on July 16 at 22:00 between Park Meadows and Eastgate Shopping Centre for breaking lockdown curfew.

He was stopped by officers while on his way home from tending to a patient.

His first court appearance was on July 19 at Edenvale Magistrate’s Court; however, the case was postponed to August 5.

When the NEWS met with Jardine on August 12, he said while in the courtroom for his second appearance, no reason was given to him why the case was withdrawn.

“Someone in the courtroom just signalled for me to leave the courtroom,” he said.

Jardine said although the case was withdrawn, he plans to take the matter further.

He urged law enforcement to leave medical personnel tending to emergencies, after curfew, alone.

“Covid-19 has caused immense psychological, emotional and financial trauma for everyone but especially medical personnel who have to treat patients infected by the virus and in some cases witness patients die from the virus in front of them,” said Jardine.

“Being arrested has added to that stress.”

Jardine thanked the community members, colleagues and the legal team of Huang Attorneys for their assistance.

“The chocolate cake from Bedfordview learner Addison Venter was also delicious,” said Jardine.

A request for comment was sent to the National Prosecuting Authority on August 13, asking why the case against Jardine was withdrawn. Comment was requested by August 16 at 10:00.

At the time of going to print, no comment had been received.
