Valke trample the Elephants

With this win, the Valke moved to the third position and will face either the Griffons in Welkom or the Leopards in Potchefstroom.

The Valke won the EP Elephants 39 – 23 to qualify for the semi-finals of the Carling Currie Cup first division.

It was a game that saw some good running rugby with the outside backs scoring no more than six tries in total for both teams.

EP was the first to score when Riaan Arends got the ball during a gap and he showed heels to score a try.

Valke fought back with Valentino Wellman scoring the first of his four tries of the match.

The Valke again hit back from the kick off and were soon back in the Elephants’ territory.

The Elephants’ defence held but they pulled down the lineout and gave the referee no other option but to award the penalty try.

The Elephants had the last say in the half when Chevandre van der Schoor scored shortly before half time to give the Elephants a 17 – 23 lead.

After the break, the Valke hit back hard with Wellman scoring three of his tries to give the Valke a 39 – 23 lead with minutes to go.

The Elephants were constantly trying to break the line but they were starting to show they were tired and their discipline cost them at the end of the day.

With this win, the Valke moved to the third position and will face either the Griffons in Welkom or the Leopards in Potchefstroom.
