Edenglen High wishes Simbine well

“He is without question a humble and a valuable member of the Edenglen High family and SA.”

Former Edenglen High School learner and SA sprinter Akani Simbine took to the world stage to represent SA at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

This year’s games mark Simbine’s second appearance at the Olympics after he competed in the 2016 Olympics in Brazil and placed fifth in the 100m sprint with a time of 9.94 seconds.

With the news that Simbine will be representing SA, Edenglen High principal Trevor Weinerlein encouraged Simbine to take his place as number one.

While at Edenglen High, Simbine was part of the first team rugby, was awarded full colours three times for athletics and full colours for soccer.

During his matric year in 2011, Simbine attained a bronze medal at the South African Junior Athletics Championships.

Weinerlein said teachers who taught Simbine described him as an intelligent, capable, dedicated and self-motivated learner.

“Simbine has always been a highly talented athlete and while at Edenglen High he was a dedicated learner,” said Weinerlein.

“He is without question a humble and a valuable member of the Edenglen High family and SA.”

Weinerlein described Simbine as a true sportsman.

In 2018 Simbine won gold in the 100m sprint at the Commonwealth Games in Australia with a time of 10.3 seconds.

In July, he won the men’s 100m at the Gyulai István Memorial, an annual track meet in Hungary, with a time of 9.84 seconds.

Simbine’s finishing time in Hungary saw him break his own 100m record of 9.89 seconds and break the 15-year-old African record of 9.85 seconds, which was set by Nigerian athlete Olusoji Fasuba.

“We at Edenglen High wish you all the best for your endeavours at the Tokyo Olympics,” highlighted Weinerlein.

“We pray you run like the wind and win the gold you deserve. You have made all of South Africa proud, but most of all, us at Edenglen High.”
