Greenstone shoppers win for a good cause during Mandela Month

The value of the collected groceries totalling R6 700 symbolises the 67 minutes of the time community members donate to charities on Mandela Day.

Greenstone Shopping Centre celebrated the spirit of Mandela Month by hosting a “Shop and Win” competition and allowed two shoppers to participate in its Trolley Dash of Hope.

The shoppers chosen to participate in the dash via a random lucky draw were Pleasure Ntsime and Nkosana Malinga.

Initially meant to be held on Mandela Day on July 18, the event was postponed to July 24 because of the recent protests and unrest in South Africa.

The Trolley Dash winners, with their partners, raced against the clock to fill their trolleys with R6 700 worth of groceries from Pick n Pay for those in need. The initial dash finished in a tie, leading the participants to go head to head in the sudden death round.

After the second round, Pleasure and her brother were declared the winning team and pocketed shopping vouchers worth R4 000 sponsored by Greenstone Shopping Centre and its tenants.

The runners-up received over R2 000 worth of Greenstone vouchers.

The groceries collected during the trolley dash were donated to The Maimane Phiri Foundation and were handed over to the beneficiary on July 24.

The value of the collected groceries totalling R6 700 symbolises the 67 minutes of the time community members donate to charities on Mandela Day. “Let us emulate the leader we loved, Nelson Mandela, by becoming servant leaders ourselves,” said Jacqui Bloom, marketing manager of Greenstone Shopping Centre.

Speaking about Mandela Day initiatives, Ward 32 councillor Bongani Nkomo said the implications of Covid-19 will be felt both temporarily and in the long term.

“Many households have essentially been forced out of permanent jobs and into informal or temporary forms of employment as a coping mechanism,” said Nkomo.

“The long-existing inequalities within our communities are being exposed and are further exacerbated by Covid-19 and the poor and vulnerable are unable to protect themselves.”

Bloom said the annual Mandela Day trolley dash is an example of how corporate and advantaged communities can work together to help others.

The Maimane Phiri Foundation, which was identified as this year’s beneficiary and the Sir Alfred Home in Klipfontein View (2020) consists of hardworking volunteers living in Alex and surroundings who commit to making a difference.

The Maimane Phiri Foundation is a brainchild of young community leaders who are led by Maimane Phiri following the success of the Maimane Alfred Phiri Games.

The foundation aims to empower and develop young boys in the Alexandra township.

Nkomo urged the community to assist such organisations where it can.

He thanked Greenstone Shopping Centre for its continued support and commitment to making a difference.
