RAG calls for calm

“There are ongoing communications, collaboration and information sharing across our area’s security network. RAG is working closely with the brilliant Bedfordview Community Policing Forum (BCPF)."

Amid the riots and looting that rocked parts of the country last week, RAG (Residents Action Group) chairperson Marina Constas urged the community to remain calm and united and be assured that the area is safe and well protected.

“What we have seen in the media, and reports from areas that have been affected, has been frightening and heart-breaking, but we must remember that we are safe in our homes in our area, and what we need most right now is calm and community unity,” she said.

“Our area has the protection not just of RAG, but of the outstanding BCPF and its patrollers, the SAPS, the SANDF, which has units stationed at nearby shopping centres, as well as other local security companies.

“RAG is working closely with all local security companies, the BCPF and SAPS. We have joint communication platforms. We are assisting and supporting one another. This is the time for unity, and cooperation is key to keeping our community safe,” she added.

Constas reported that investigations and intelligence gathered by the dedicated RAG team and RAG’s security partners have confirmed that the looters are not targeting individual homes but large distribution centres and shopping centres.

“Please be assured that we are safe in our homes. Our local malls are also being monitored and are well protected.”
Constas said while we can expect some supply chain disruptions and sporadic shortages of some goods in some areas, there will not be nationwide shortages.

“I urge everyone in our community not to panic-buy and stockpile. This only creates more supply chain issues and means some people will get the essential goods they need, but others will not.

“At this time, our thoughts go out to those who have been personally impacted by the unrest. When it is behind us, we will share details of initiatives that RAG intends to get involved in to help desperate communities to rebuild.

“In the meantime, let us unite as a community to get through this. Help others wherever you can,” she said.

“Many are still struggling through the third wave of Covid-19. Let’s share positive messages. Beware of fake news and fear mongering.”

She reminded community members to alert RAG to anything of concern, including, suspicious persons, vehicles or activities.

Residents should call the RAG control room on 082 322 3333.
