An officer from Gauteng Traffic Police foiled a suspected cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery in Greenstone on June 25.

The officer, who is a member of the Special Patrol Unit, was on patrol in the Greenstone area when he received a tip-off from a member of the public.

According to a spokesperson for the Gauteng Traffic Police, Sello Maremane, the community member informed the officer that a robbery was in progress at Greenstone Mall.

He added that when the officer arrived at the mall, the suspects opened fire before fleeing the scene.

Maremane said the officer noticed that a CIT van had been in a crash with a grey BMW.

Another vehicle, a Lexus, was also abandoned at the scene.

Both vehicles are suspected to have been used by the suspects in their robbery attempt.

During on-scene investigations, police officers found explosives in the BMW believed to be used in the commission of CIT robberies.

The suspects evaded capture following the shoot-out and investigations into the matter will continue.

Gauteng Traffic Police applauded the officer for his bravery.

“The Gauteng Traffic Police would like to commend the officer for stopping the CIT suspects. This demonstrates our unwavering zeal to root out crime in the province,” said Maremane.

He appealed to anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact their nearest police station.

“We also appeal to members of the public not to try and apprehend these criminals when spotted, as they are dangerous,” said Maremane.
