Climbing a great hill

Parks and outside places like Melville Koppies are still open.

President Cyril Ramaphosa placed the country back on level four lockdown on June 27.

He quoted our former president, Nelson Mandela, who once said that in the long road to freedom he had discovered that ‘after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are more to climb’.

Fortunately, parks and outside places like Melville Koppies are still open.

At the entrance to the koppies, visitors get to see one hill, but just like Mandela said, when you reach the top of that ridge, there is another.

But the climb is not too severe and once summited, walkers and hikers are rewarded with views across the entire Johannesburg.

Melville Koppies Central (Nature Reserve and Heritage Site) is open every Sunday in 2021 from 08:00 to 11:30.

There is no need to pre-book. The entry fee for adults is R80 and children R40.

There are season tickets on sale at a cost of R500.

All income derived is used for maintenance and security of the koppies, which amounts to R22 000 per month.

Secure parking is available opposite the entrance to the koppies at Marks Park in Judith Road, Emmarentia. Mid-week school tours and ordinary tours can be arranged. For more information, contact wendavid@mweb.co.za or visit www.mk.org.za
