Edenvale residents assist in breaking world record

“It was an absolute highlight to see how many people got involved in this initiative. The cherry on top was to get the Guinness World Record.”

The atmosphere was jubilant at Emperors Palace and the Discovery Healthy Food Studio when it was announced that SA had broken the Guinness World Record for the most people cooking simultaneously online.

On June 24 over 2 000 South Africans, including Edenvale and Kempton Park residents, joined celebrity chefs J’Something and David Higg in an attempt to break the record and raise funds for the Reach For A Dream Foundation.

The attempt was part of The Reach For A Dream Foundation’s Cooking For Dreams fund-raising initiative.

It was officially announced by the Guinness World Records adjudicator, Sophia Greenacher, in the UK that Reach For A Dream had succeeded in breaking the Guinness World Record for the most people cooking simultaneously online on the night.

This makes South Africa the second country to hold the Guinness World Record.

The previous attempt was held earlier this year in the UK, totalling 532 people cooking online.

“The Cooking For Dreams event was wonderful. It was inspiring to see so many South Africans come together in support of our dream children and for the exciting moment to break a Guinness World Record,” said Julia Sotirianakos, Reach For A Dream CEO.

The Cooking For Dreams participants were in good hands, as My Kitchen Rules chefs reunited to host the event and show the participants, who watched the chefs via Microsoft Teams, how to make a pea curry.

Participants purchased their Cooking For Dreams box for R350 from the event website and received a box filled with Woolworths ingredients to make the dish.

J’Something, who is passionate about the work Reach For A Dream, shared: “We did it. We dreamt about doing this and not only have we realised our dream, but we have helped Reach For A Dream realise so many more dreams for our children. I am beaming with pride right now.”

“We honestly couldn’t have done it without our partners, Discovery Vitality, DHL and Woolworths. Our broadcast partners Eventcast and Peermont gave their all to get the production underway; they were incredible,” said Sotirianakos.

Cooking For Dreams host Higgs said: “It was an absolute highlight to see how many people got involved in this initiative. The cherry on top was to get the Guinness World Record.

“Reach for a Dream is an incredible cause. Sometimes we think we are going through hard times, especially during this pandemic, but imagine what it’s like for young children with life-threatening diseases. A lot needs to sink in, but it’s been a very special day.”
