Express your greatness by writing

“If you only write for an hour a day for a year, and at worst can only craft 300 words a day, you’ll have 109 500 words. Enough for one and a half books.”

Writers 2000 enjoyed an entertaining and informative Zoom session with writer, philosopher and professional speaker Jacques de Villiers on June 12.

“If you only write for an hour a day for a year, and at worst can only craft 300 words a day, you’ll have 109 500 words. Enough for one and a half books.

“Writing for me is as important as breathing,” said Jacques.

“I write because I’ll die if I don’t.”

According to Jacques, there are many benefits to writing.

Writing can influence people in a good way and help to make this world a better place.

Jacques emphasised how important it is to ‘just write’.

“Don’t get distracted,” he warned.

“Make writing a habit. I warm up with 750 words every day and then write an additional 1 000 words a day. I’ve been doing this near on 21 years and I have amassed a body of work comprising 12 million words.

“I’m a novice compared to someone like author James Michener, who knocked up 7 000 words every day for a lot longer than I did.”

Jacques said that everyone has a story in them.

“We owe it to the world to share it with everyone. You are the greatest work of the creator, so go and express that work by writing your greatest work.”

Writers 2000 is giving you the chance to submit your short story for its annual competition.

The deadline for the competition is August 31.
