Hundred-year-old Maureen gets Covid-19 vaccine

“The Department of Health gave specific instructions on how to set up vaccination stations and what equipment to provide.”

Hundred-year-old Maureen Waddington recently received her Covid-19 vaccination as part of phase two of the government’s vaccination programme.

Maureen, who lives at Rand Aid Association’s Elphin Lodge Retirement Village with a part-time carer, was given the vaccination on May 18.

The centenarian was happy and positive during the process and eager to receive her vaccination.

Rand Aid, which runs independent-living retirement villages, frail-care centres and substance-abuse treatment centre, has set up various Covid-19 vaccination stations for its residents.

“The Department of Health gave specific instructions on how to set up vaccination stations and what equipment to provide,” said Rand Aid senior nursing manager Avril Maltman, who heads up the project.

“Our village sisters and identified staff at Ron Smith Care Centre were trained as vaccinators.

“We have 10 registered Rand Aid Association trained vaccinators who will move between vaccination sites,” she said.

Ron Smith Care Centre, Elphin Lodge and Thornhill Manor residents are being vaccinated at Elphin Lodge, while Tarentaal, Inyoni Creek and Wedge Gardens residents will be vaccinated at Tarentaal.

Thembalami and Max Ordman Deaf Association residents will be vaccinated at Thembalami Care Centre.

Each vaccination station includes a waiting area, a registration station, a screening station, a waiting area after the screening from which residents will be called for vaccination, a vaccination station where monitors will direct residents to the next available vaccinator and an observation station where residents will be observed after their vaccination for any possible side effects.
