Edenvale bowlers excel nationally

Bowlers from Edenvale Bowling Club competed in the recent SA national bowling tournament where they excelled.

This year, the men’s event was hosted by Western Province Bowling Association (WPBA) and the women’s event was hosted by the Johannesburg Bowls Association (JBA). The events ran from May 8 to 16.

Results from the WPBA-hosted men’s nationals:

Edenvale Bowling Club had eight participants in the men’s, fours, pairs and singles. There were five u-35s in the group. Two are students.

In the singles category, Andre Waters was a sectional winner and made the playoff while Greg Burns made the last 32.

Not to be outdone, teammate Matthew Phiri made the last eight for the second consecutive year.

In the pairs, Burns and Brandon Wysoke paired up and made the last 32.

While competing in the fours, the two Edenvale teams made the last 16. Waters, Wysoke and Burns are the youngest members of the team, (u-25).

Results from the JBA-hosted women’s nationals:

In the singles (46 sections), Lynda Hopkins won her section after she won both her games.

Hopkins won her first play-off match 21-12. Lynda was knocked out in the next round.

In the pairs (24 sections), Edenvale won two of their five games. They finished fourth in their section.

In the fours (12 sections), Edenvale won three of their five games. The team placed fourth in its section.

In June, the bowlers will represent Edenvale Bowling Club at the KwaZulu-Natal open.
The Gauteng open will be held in July.

The 2022 Men’s SA nationals will be hosted by the Ekurhuleni Bowling Association.

Raymond Pieters of Edenvale Bowling Club said with three greens, EBC is always on the hunt for new bowlers.

There is no age restriction for the sport and the club has bowling activities every day, especially public holidays and weekends.

Mondays are used as rest days by club members, especially after tournament weekends.
