An excited group of Reddam Bedfordview music learners and singers eagerly awaited the arrival of Karien de Waal on May 4.
De Waal was in town to present three workshops at the Artist in Residence Groove School Workshop.
Karien, a graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, explored techniques involving the writing and performing of a song from conception to completion.
Feedback was positive and after three interesting workshops, the musicians and singers had an opportunity to put their knowledge to good use by performing two songs at the afternoon showcase.

Karien is the founder of #JoinBandsNotGangs that aims to empower youth gang members on the Cape Flats to become professional musicians and prevent youths from joining gangs. Her vision is to gift one million musical instruments to one million youths in South Africa.
