Heritage precinct walks to recommence in Modderfontein

Get historical with Modderfontein Conservation Society.

After a two-year gap caused by the pandemic, Modderfontein Conservation Society (MCS) will host two walks through the Heritage Precinct. The walks will take place on May 15 in celebration of International Museum Day.

Led by Keith Martin and Robbie Vermont, the walks will begin at The Dynamite Company Museum at 2 Main Street at 9.30am. It will start in front of one of the first two domestic houses built in the area in 1895.

This house was occupied for close to 90 years before being restored in 1987. Since being restored, the house is almost exactly as it was when it was built by Austrian, Italian and German artisans. The 2.2km route, which lasts about two hours, will include the historical buildings and artefacts in and around Modderfontein’s Heritage Precinct.

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) established International Museum Day in 1977 to increase public awareness of the role of museums in the development of society.
