Reddam learners honour Sekoto

Sekoto was selected because of his vibrant use of colour and prominence in South African art history.

Grade 10, 11 and 12 art learners from Reddam House, Bedfordview, came together to commemorate artist Gerard Sekoto, a pioneer of urban black art and social realism.

The collaboration of creatives occurred when the learners painted a mural on the courtyard wall just outside the art room. Sekoto was selected because of his vibrant use of colour and prominence in South African art history.

The artwork chosen is “Street Scene” painted in 1941-2. Sekoto painted many genre scenes in this manner of places like Sophiatown, Eastwood and District Six, which suffered through forced removals during the apartheid era.

The learners’ version of this artwork has added a beautiful rendering to be appreciated through the windows of the art room.
