Caring for 101 residents at Arbor Village Care Centre

Recognising the need for special care facilities for seniors, Methodist Homes took the decision to incorporate a purpose-built care centre into Arbor Village when the home first opened its doors to retirees on June 27, 1987.

Working together as a tightly knit team, the dedicated and compassionate staff at Arbor Village provide holistic, high-quality and professional care to the residents at the retirement village’s care centre.
Many people retire in good health and can live independently.

But as their health status changes and they become increasingly frail, their medical requirements change too.
Recognising the need for special care facilities for seniors, Methodist Homes decided to incorporate a purpose-built care centre into Arbor Village when the home first opened its doors to retirees on June 27, 1987.

“Thanks to our care centre, we can offer a range of services, from basic daily check-ups to 24/7 professional and qualified care,” said Arbor Village manager Denise Stanton.
Centrally located in Bedfordview, the Arbor Village care centre has been carefully laid out, offering flexible accommodation options, ranging from single, double and four-bedded rooms, with or without private bathrooms.

“We can offer mid care to 34 residents with a further 64 beds for frail-care residents,” said Denise.
Statistics show a concerning increase in degenerative brain diseases and families are not able to offer the special care that people living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia require.

There are also very few facilities in South Africa that can offer this type of specialist care.

“With this in mind, we decided to expand the Arbor Village care centre in 2007, enabling us to offer specialised care to residents living with Alzheimer’s or other dementias within a safe and supportive environment,” said Denise.
Residents in the care centre are in the hands of 13 qualified professional nursing staff, 48 care workers and two recreational coordinators.

The nursing staff attend regular training courses and are continuously working in-house on honing skills and knowledge to ensure that they are well qualified to care for residents.

The care centre is also equipped with CCTV cameras.

Denise said that the rates at Arbor Village Care Centre include a holistic service offering that comprises full board and lodging, 24/7 nursing care, a doctor on call, laundry, recreational activities, as well as occupational therapy.
“While qualified care is important, we understand that our care centre residents need pampering so we have ensured that hairdressers are also available to them.
“Each one of our residents is treated as an individual and with the dignity and respect they deserve,” said Denise.
“In addition to a nursing plan that is tailored to the needs of each resident, our care centre also provides respite care when families go on holiday as well as recuperative care after hospitalisation or illness.”

The facility accommodates a geriatric daycare centre and sickbay.
Other services that are available at the care centre for all Arbor Village residents, including those residents who are living independently, include podiatry, reflexology, physiotherapy and audiology for their own account.

Arbor Village offers a variety of independent living accommodation options, all available on a life rights basis.

The 190 units, nestled in the village’s beautifully landscaped and secure gardens, range from bachelor, one and two-bedroom flats to two-bedroom cottages.
A circular driveway around the grounds provides an ideal walking track.

The village also features a pond, which is home to colourful Koi fish and territorial Egyptian geese.
Methodist Homes has, for the past 50 years, provided secure and safe accommodation and professional and compassionate care to approximately 2 000 residents living at the organisation’s 15 retirement villages, 12 in Gauteng and three in the North West Province.

Nine of the villages have well-equipped care centres.
In addition to Arbor Village, two other Methodist Homes Retirement Villages have an Alzheimer’s section and one retirement village based in Germiston accommodates only residents living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, offering specialist care in a nurturing environment.
