CoE’s indigent relief programme to help low-income households

City spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said these households are urged to register for the city’s indigent relief programme.

The City of Ekurhuleni reminds households that are unable to pay for necessities such as water, sanitation, refuse removal and electricity that a relief programme is available.

City spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said these households are urged to register for the city’s indigent relief programme. “The City of Ekurhuleni is inviting qualifying citizens to apply for the indigent relief programme.”

Benefits enjoyed by those who are registered include the following free services:

• Water – 9kl
• Sewer – 9kl
• Electricity – 100kW/h
• Refuse removal
• Property rates in line with newly adopted municipal property rates policy

Households with a combined or joint gross monthly income, which is less than the equivalent of two social pension grants per month qualify as indigents. To register, applicants need to visit an indigent office at any customer care centre across the City and fill in the application form.

“The indigent officer will check whether the client is the owner of the property and request all the supporting documents that are necessary.”

The following documents are needed based on the applicable category:

Pensioner applicants

1. ID copy of the applicant
2. ID copy of spouse if applicable
3. ID/birth certificate copies of dependents who reside on the property
4. Latest municipal account statement
5. Sassa pension statement of the applicant and their spouse if applicable
6. Affidavits from all unemployed household residents over the age of 18 years or proof of registration if they are still full-time students

Unemployed applicants

1. ID of the applicant
2. ID copy of spouse if applicable
3. ID/birth certificate copies of dependents who reside on the property if applicable
4. Latest municipal account statement
5. Affidavits from all unemployed household residents over the age of 18 years or proof of registration if they are still full-time students

Employed applicants

1. ID of the applicant
2. ID copy of spouse if applicable
3. ID/birth certificate copies of dependents who reside on the property, if applicable
4. Latest municipal account statement
5. Latest payslip or formal letter from employer
6. Three months bank statement
7. Affidavits from all unemployed household residents over the age of 18 years or proof of registration if they are still full-time students
