Girl (10) lends a hand to those in need

“We are incredibly proud of our daughter and how big her heart is and her gentle soul that always looks to help others who are in need.”

Inspired to help others in need, 10-year-old Edenvale resident Michela Scalone raised R2 800. She donated the money to Bedfordview and Germiston SPCA and also Stepping Stone Hospice and Care Services in Alberton.

Michela raised the money during the December holidays and donated R1 500 to the care centre and R1 300 worth of dog and cat food to the SPCA. Her mother, Manuela, said, “Michela decided to do something special and try give back to others who are less fortunate than us.”

She decided to sell pancakes every Saturday morning to raise money for people with cancer and the animals in need. Waking up each Saturday morning, Michela would prepare her ingredients, pack her pans and go with her parents at 6.30am to set up at her station at Da Graziella restaurant in Edenvale.

There she, her parents, grandparents, and siblings would assist the determined young lady to carry out her passion to help others. “She was very successful in her plan and we thank all the people who came to support her and helped her raise money for this good cause,” said a proud Manuela.

“We are incredibly proud of our daughter and how big her heart is. She has a gentle soul that always looks to help others who are in need.” Manuela explained that her daughter was inspired by many things.

“She gets very heart sore when she sees how many people are homeless and saddened that so many animals are abandoned,” said Manuela.

She explained that Stepping Stones was close to Michela’s heart as it has a large impact on the lives of many people around us. “As her parents, we always try to teach her how to be kind and to help others and that as a good Catholic we need to always try to help others less fortunate than us,” said Manuela.

“Michela is taught morals, leadership, kindness, giving and helping others from her teachers and school that sets good examples.”

Looking at projects in the future, Michela would like to try to do another fund-raiser to raise money for other institutions in need and the less fortunate.
