Sacred Heart matrics shine

In 2020, matric learners were asked to let go of the traditional rites and rituals that normally mark a matric year.

One thing that did not change was the educational approach of Sacred Heart Collage, which was transformative, innovative and academically rigorous.

Teachers, staff and learners at the school remained empathetic, relational, collaborative and creative, despite the pandemic.

The disrupted year and the unfamiliar terrain was a challenge for teachers as they worked hard to deliver the best curriculum in a new situation.

Sacred Heart College maintained its 100 per cent pass rate, which it has recorded since 1997. The 2020 results will allow all learners at the school to access most higher education institutions, with 95 per cent of learners achieving entry to bachelor degree studies.

The results this year include above IEB average achievements in most subjects, an increase in the overall number of distinctions, and in the number of distinctions per candidate. While matric results are a valuable indicator of our learners’ success, the school believes that excellent matric results are only one measure of this.

Zameer Dada achieved eight distinctions, which included 100 per cent for mathematics, 93 per cent for information technology and 90 per cent for advanced programme mathematics.

In 2019 as a Grade 11 learner, he wrote a book called The Lion of Soweto and the Spelling Bee. The sales from the book have been donated to the National Education Collaboration Trust and other small literacy NGOs.

Zameer also completed his Gold President’s Award and received recognition as a soccer player, chess player and World Scholar’s Cup winner.

Simran Baloo, who achieved eight distinctions, showed resilience and the ability to recover and refocus. He achieved his distinctions in accounting, advanced programme mathematics, Afrikaans, English, life orientation, life sciences, mathematics and physical sciences.

Tahir Tayob obtained seven distinctions in English, Afrikaans, advance programme English, accounting, history, life orientation and mathematics. He was also placed in the top one per cent of all IEB candidates in advance programme English.

Bilal Tayob obtained seven distinctions in Afrikaans, English, accounting, information technology, life orientation, mathematics and physical sciences.

Kabir Jugram achieved seven distinctions in English, advance programme English, accounting, history, life orientation, mathematics and physical sciences. He was also placed in the top one per cent of all IEB candidates English.
