Full house for head boy, girl

Eight of the school’s top achievers walked away from their 2020 matric year with a full house of distinctions.

It was dedicated teamwork between teachers and learners at Saheti School that produced stellar results in the IEB exams for 2020. Eight of the school’s top achievers walked away with a full house of distinctions.

Among them was head boy and Saheti’s top candidate, George Georgiades. George achieved the highest average in the school with 94.2 per cent and a full house of nine distinctions in English, information technology, isiZulu, life orientation, life sciences, mathematics, modern Greek, physical sciences and advanced programme mathematics.

His academic journey was rocked when he lost his father to Covid-19 in August, last year. He said he would not have been able to achieve the success he did, without the constant support of his teachers and peers.

George, who plans to study medicine later this year, was also voted the outstanding achiever by the IEB after he ranked within the top one per cent nationally in English, life sciences, mathematics, modern Greek and advanced programme mathematics.

Sinazo Mthethwa achieved an average of 90.1 per cent and a full house of eight distinctions in accounting, English, isiZulu, life orientation, life sciences, mathematics, physical sciences and advanced programme mathematics.

She has been named a commendable achiever by the IEB and was ranked within the top one per cent nationally in English.

Saheti head girl Sofia Ferretti achieved the second highest average at the school with 92.6 per cent and a full house of 10 distinctions in English, information technology, isiZulu, life orientation, life sciences, mathematics, modern Greek, physical sciences, visual arts and advanced programme mathematics.

Additionally, Sofia achieved 100 per cent for mathematics and was ranked within the top one per cent nationally of IEB candidates in English, life sciences, mathematics and visual arts.

In total Saheti’s 58 matric learners brought home 231 distinctions. This equated to 3.98 distinctions per candidate in the IEB examinations. Of the 58 matriculants, 29.3 per cent achieved six or more distinctions.

The ethos of Saheti is to engender a passion and love for excellence, marked by a growth mindset and self-knowledge. Director of Academics at the school Dr Daniella Pitt said 2020 was a difficult year nationally and the Saheti matric learners did exceptionally well.

“Learners from all kinds of difficulties managed to pull it off. We have a strong academic team behind us who have nurtured learners. They soared like eagles and now the world awaits them.” Principal Warwick Taylor said the individual results attained by the learners were superb.

“Saheti’s 2020 matric results are part of the silver lining in a year beset with uncertainty and hardship. “I commend the matrics for their tenacity and for the effort they put into their studies. I thank the teachers who gave of themselves tirelessly to ensure that the curriculum was covered seamlessly online, they too are the heroes of our 2020 success story,” he said.

Taylor added that the school’s matric class showed grit and resilience and put in hours of hard work. “These types of results do not come easy.”

He said that the school’s effortless integration with online learning showed that the teachers were ready to grow into what would become the new normal in the school environment.

“This year’s matric class could look back at the achievements of the 2020 class and see a recipe for success.”
