Schultz ready for anything

“The sport gave me a second chance at life and changed my life. I’m going to show everyone what I can do and what Mimo has done.”

Professional boxer Sheldon Shultz will step into the ring again when he fights for a TK Promotional Gauteng title. The 29-year-old welterweight division fighter will fight on March 7 in Randfontein.

Originally scheduled to fight on December 13, the bout was postponed because of Covid-19. Shultz will be fighting as a member of the Team Sweat Box gym where he has trained for the past two years under coach Domenico ‘Mimo’ Spirito.

Shultz grew up in a poor background. He would often look up to American boxer Muhammad Ali as a role model, hoping to one day be as great as him.

“I remember one of the first times I walked into Mimo’s gym. I told the coach I was going to be the best fighter in the world and he just looked at me and said no I wasn’t.

“I was taken aback, I didn’t know what to say. “He told me anyone can fight and throw a fist but a real boxer must know how to fight and where to land his punches.”

Since he started his boxing career, Mimo is Schultz’ fourth coach. Schultz said he feels at home at Sweat Box and has been working well with the coaches and other boxers.

Teammate Nelson Mbele said Shultz trains with the will and shows his full potential every time he steps into the gym.

“He has tremendous heart and passion for the sport,” said Mbele. Mimo said Sheldon is doing well at the gym and is prepared for the bout.

“He is anxious but that is understandable and that often works for a lot of boxers leading up to a fight,” explained Mimo.

“I never want to feel cocky before a fight but I feel prepared and I feel good for the upcoming fight,” said Schultz. “The sport gave me a second chance at life and changed my life. I’m going to show everyone what I can do and what Mimo has done.”

As a boxer, Shultz hopes of being globally renowned like his childhood idol, Ali. “I have this image in my head of me standing on the ropes and thousands of people cheering for me, that would be amazing.

“Although I have that big dream, I am happy where I am. I never thought I could be where I am today and preparing for a title fight and I want to thank everyone for getting me here.”
