100 years and still strong

Her mother, Mabel, met a British soldier passing through Durban on a way to war in Persia.

St George’s Village resident Jean Fairweather (nee Booth) celebrated a century of life after she celebrated her 100th birthday on January 24.

Before finding herself in SA, Jean was born in 1921 in the village of Upminster in England.

The couple fell in love, married and moved to England where they started a family. Jean’s father died of tuberculosis when she was 14 years old. Shortly, after, she, her mother and brother returned to Durban where she finished her schooling and learnt sewing at a convent.

Jean married Alan Fairweather (dead) and they had three daughters, Vivien, Pauline (dead) and Lyn, who all now live in St George’s Village with her.

She has five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a number of step-grandchildren. As a result of the sewing skills she learnt at the Durban convent, Jean sewed all her own clothes and also made numerous wedding dresses over the years.

She loved cooking, entertaining and having dinner parties. Her wide circle of friends, of all ages, is evidence of her love for people and their regard for her.

Jean has been a long-time member of St Patrick’s Anglican Church in Malvern and for many years did a lot of charity work. Throughout her life she was a committed Christian
