Mashile wraps up 2020 and talks 2021

“We will serve the community to the best of our ability.”

Officers of Edenvale SAPS are ready to take on whatever challenges the year might throw their way. Edenvale SAPS spokesperson Sgt Jacob Mashile said under the leadership of acting station commander Col Eunice Nzusa the station is prepared for the year ahead.

Former station commander Col Sudesh Sookraj was promoted to the rank of brigadier and transferred to Thembisa earlier in January.

Mashile said 2020 was an interesting year for Edenvale and for policing. He said although the pandemic affected crime it never affected the role police play in the community.

“Covid-19 restricted the movement of community members, reduced access to liquor, and reduced crime in several other ways; however, officers always performed to the best of their abilities with the resources at hand.”

Mashile said last year the top crimes were motor vehicle theft followed by residential burglaries. The theft of motor vehicles occurred mainly at shopping centres, parking lots, or while vehicles were parked on the streets.

“Investigating officers believe there is a group of suspects operating in and around Edenvale, targeting certain makes and models,” said Mashile.

With regards to residential burglaries, Mashile said most of them appeared to be crimes of opportunity. He said suspects would notice a property with an open window or no security system and decide to break into it.

“In some instances, there would be a residential home and the burglary would become a robbery.” Mashile urged community members to make use of and to take all advice offered by the SAPS seriously.

Mashile said overall during 2020, there were fewer violent crimes in Edenvale than compared to other policing precincts such as Kempton Park and Germiston.

He believes this is largely to do with the strong relationship the police has with the community and its stakeholders. “The police in Edenvale work closely with other law-enforcement agencies, security companies and members of the community; in 2021 we will continue to do so.”

He said the station will continue to conduct patrols, crime-prevention operations, visible policing and roadblocks. “We will serve the community to the best of our ability. We will continue to partner with the community and other law-enforcement agencies.

“Edenvale is a caring community, we will always look after our residents so let us all work together this year.”
