Horse paddocks have potential

The City of Ekurhuleni has said that it will not consider moving the EMPD Equestrian Unit back to Gillooly’s Farm.

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has said that it will not consider moving the EMPD Equestrian Unit back to Gillooly’s Farm.

For a number of years the Equestrian facility, situated on the Gillooly’s property, was home to the EMPD’s mounted unit before it was moved to Benoni.

Acting spokesperson for CoE Solly Mashabela said the property would be unable to accommodate the current number of officers in the unit.

Bedfordview ward councillor Jill Humphreys believes that the Equestrian Unit if housed on the property would be beneficial for conducting patrols at not only Gillooly’s Farm but also the Morninghill koppies.

“The equestrian unit will be able to go places that normal units simply cannot get to,” she said.

Humphreys, who recently visited the property, told the NEWS that the property holds great potential.

“It’s such a shame that it’s not being used to its full potential.”

She added that a number of residents and rescue organisations had requested to use the property as a rescue and rehabilitation centre for animals.

However, Mashabela told the NEWS that CoE had not been approached by anyone about the use of the property. He added that the property is currently occupied by officers from the EMPD SWAT and CLU. Mashabela added that 51 officers stay on the property.

Humphreys, who recently visited the property, old the NEWS that the property holds great potential.
