Rand Aid residents come together for birthday revelry

The celebrations, held on separate occasions, gave Rand Aid residents a sense of normality as they enjoyed themselves.

At the end of last year, the birthdays of Rand Aid’s Thembalami Care Centre and that of Max Ordman Deaf Association were celebrated.

The celebrations, held on separate occasions, gave Rand Aid residents a sense of normality as they enjoyed themselves.

“We normally combine the two occasions given how busy December is, but last year we kept them separate to add to the residents’ pleasure,” said Thembalami liaison manager Elize Raath.

The first celebration was held on November 18 and the second on December 9.

I’Ona Myburgh was the oldest resident celebrating a birthday in December. She turned 92 on December 14.

The Inyoni Angels, a group of residents from nearby Inyoni Creek Retirement Village, also Rand Aid-run, have supported the care centre for years by contributing to special days.

Birthday celebrations are held monthly and are made memorable by the Angels, who give gifts to all birthday celebrants and provide eats for the day.

Priscilla Putter and Henriette Cronje from Doves, Edenvale and Kempton Park, donated ice-cream for the December birthday celebration, which was enjoyed after the gifts donated by the Inyoni Angels were handed out.

“It was a warm day and the ice-cream was a hit,” said Elize.
